Project Description
Here’s a project we really enjoyed working on. The Subaru BRZ is a very cool car but the factory sound system leaves a lot to be desired and the amount of road noise is terrible. This car was only a few weeks old when the keys were handed over for an upgrade.
Our customer wanted to use his Precision Power PCX-5800 5 channel amplifier, so we decided to build everything around it. Top-of-the-line Pioneer AVIC-Z150BH navigation system supplied the 4-volt pre-out signal the amplifier needed to power all the speakers. In the front, we used a set of JBL GTO608c components and GTO428 coaxials. The 608c mid-drivers replaced the door speakers and the tweeters were mounted in the factory location in the dash next to the JBL 4” speakers. GTO428’s were also used for the rear locations (the factory speaker mounting brackets were used for both the front and rear speakers). The Subaru packed impressive bass response provided by the JL Audio Stealthbox subwoofer mounted in the trunk. We had to custom cut the trunk access panel and relocate the spare tire tools in order to retain access to the spare tire. The amplifier was mounted directly below the rear package tray using custom made brackets (only place this huge amp would fit).
In order to get more out of the stereo system and decrease the amount of road noise, we used Cascade Audio Engineering’s sound damping and sound blocking products. Vibration control and noise dampening sheets were applied after removing all interior parts (including factory wiring and airbags). Sound deadening the entire vehicle ensured a much quieter ride and richer audio listening experience. Once everything was removed, 35% SunTek window film (thanks to Doug at Auto Appearance) was applied to the windows for a clean look. After reassembly, another cool feature we added was retaining the stock USB and auxiliary inputs and wiring them directly to the Pioneer’s USB and auxiliary inputs. This gives a nice factory feel to an aftermarket system the customer can truly appreciate.
This system sounded great at full volume, and the customer was bragging about the quietness of his new ride to his friends! We love helping our customers get the most out of their vehicles!
